they knew what the fuck an endowment effect was and wrote about that shit extensively. One author used the example of a warlord who lets his men take all the booty they can, then comes around and collects his 10% or whatever off everyone's take, like the mafia. The Germans understood that it was painful for the men to give up their loot at that point. It was better for the king to snag his share without making it feel like he was encroaching on another's man's property. They went way deeper than Machiavelli
