can you just upload fake tax forms, or do you authorize them to pull your tax transcripts directly from the irs like a mortgage company would do?

yep, that will work and no one has ever thought of that. also if you live in nyc you can buy a shitty condo in FL and pretend to live there and not pay state income tax. no one has ever thought of doing that either.

The current version of the FAFSA pulls tax information directly from the IRS. I think it is possible to opt out, but if you do this, I can guarantee that the university's financial aid office will insist on doing a full financial rectal exam before they give you any aid. And if you got caught giving them fake tax returns or other fraudulent financial data, you could end up in jail for that. Not worth the risk IMHO, but you do you.

The Higher Education Act of 1965 provides severe penalties for financial aid fraud, including fines of up to $20,000 and up to 5 years in prison.
Financial aid fraud includes making false and misleading statements on the FAFSA. Lying on the FAFSA is also considered perjury.
The College Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act of 2000 provides for enhanced penalties for fraud and misrepresentation involving scholarships, grants, loans, tuition discounts or other financial aid.
To the extent that the FAFSA was submitted by postal mail or by computer networks, the applicant and the applicant’s parents may be subject to penalties for mail fraud and wire fraud. Mail fraud and wire fraud are felonies that can result in fines of up to $1 million and up to 30 years in prison.
Financial aid fraud involving identity theft may lead to additional fines and prison time, depending on applicable federal, state and local laws.
The family will also be required to repay all fraudulently obtained student financial aid.
Many colleges have student codes of conduct which can result in an offer of admission being revoked, the student being expelled and degrees being rescinded.

And yes, normally the FAFSA pulls your income information directly from the IRS. You can try to opt out, but opting out is an immediate red flag, so expect them to scrutinize all documents that you send them very carefully. It's not worth the risk IMHO.

How does that even work? Defrauding the financial aid office at some private school? I'm not sure if the government cares if you defraud a private school if no taxpayer money is involved, but the school still might expel your kid and/or report him to colleges and/or sue. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

the fed government prosecutes plenty of fraud on behalf of megacorps that is solely a private matter and should be handled by the civil court system
