Varlam Shalamov lost his differently. The gulag simply burned it away, the way extreme cold burns off sensation through exposure, gradually and then completely, until nothing remained, not even the question. This is a post about his Kolyma Tales, and about what it looks like when a human being writes seriously and carefully from that position.
