what a kooky coincidence
Investigation into the "Israeli art student" phenomenon—a series of detentions and deportations involving young Israeli nationals in the months leading up to and immediately following 9/11—found several instances of geographic proximity between these individuals and the hijackers.
Official reports from the DEA and memos submitted to the 9/11 Commission detailed these overlaps, though investigators ultimately concluded there was no evidence the students were involved in the attacks.
Key Geographical Overlaps
The most notable instances of proximity occurred in areas where the hijackers lived and trained:
• Hollywood, Florida: This was a primary hub for the hijackers. Lead hijacker Mohamed Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi lived in the Hollywood/Coral Springs area. Reports indicated that a group of Israeli "art students" also resided in Hollywood, Florida, during the same period. One specific report noted that a group of Israelis was living at 4220 Sheridan Street, just blocks away from where Atta and others were known to have maintained a mailbox or resided.
• Irving, Texas: Several students were detained in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Hijackers were known to have visited or stayed in the region during their flight training.
• San Diego, California: Both "art students" and hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar were active in San Diego at the same time.
