A friend of mine from my younger years recently had his first child as an older father, and I noticed that internally I felt ambivalent. This is a guy I’ve been friends with for a very long time, he’s been a pretty good buddy (and I’ve lost most of my friends during my spiritual journey, unfortunately), so I thought it would be worth examining these feelings and determining what its cause was.

First, about this friend: he’s financially successful and his career is on the upswing and peaking. He’s making a lot of money. He has a lot of friends due to his extraversion, friendliness, and interest in common topics, especially traveling. He is a good looking fellow, and he is primarily control/agency stabilized with esteem/status secondary, low coherence, low meaning/narrative, medium attachment/belonging. He is part of an upper social layer and is a figure in his community.

Alternatively, as regular readers know, I am primarily coherence stabilized, with secondary stabilizers of control/agency and meaning/narrative. I have very low esteem/status or attachment/belonging drives. I think the ambivalence is seeing someone my age, from a similar background, become rich and successful in this world - the gulf in career trajectories and life trajectories only widens, deepens, becomes more clear as one ages - really valued for what he is doing, with no psychological or psychosomatic “tax” being paid for following his own path, while my calling is toward a pessimistic esoteric spirituality which has resonance with only a tiny, tiny, tiny number of people worldwide. Yes, I’ve argued that an Abraxian worldview can spread only by resonance one soul at a time, not as an egregore for mass adoption; but there is still a part of me that does want recognition and success for my efforts, of course. I have to live in the real world as well; unless I made a career off of this work somehow, there is still bills to pay, food to eat, taxes, gas, insurance, etc; this means that, even though I pay a significant psychosomatic “tax” interacting with an extraverted, money-obsessed, status-obsessed shallow and forgetful world, I have to live in this world at least in part, in my friend’s world, even though he doesn’t have to live at all in mine. And so that rankles.

But there is another layer to this too: I cannot fully follow my path fulltime, even if I had the financial resources to do so; and the reason for this is it is too easy for it to become an echo chamber, my path requires me to place myself into uncomfortable situations that then cause me to reflect on the various issues, energies that arise from those situations.

So this is a situation of the crucifixion of the opposites: I can’t follow my path full-time even if I had the resources to do so and wanted to, because I must place myself in situations that are outside my comfort zone constantly in order to continually refine my worldview. But this increases my resentment as well, because it is torn between competing poles. Most of the time the resentment is backgrounded - it’s not suppressed, I acknowledge it, it’s there and probably permanent based on this structural condition - but from time to time it becomes foregrounded, especially when I am interacting with age peers who have become so successful in life. Or to put it another way, it hits upon my secondary stabilizer of control/agency, making it jealous and temporarily foregrounded.

So ultimately this isn’t about my buddy, who I consciously do want to be successful and happy and have a great life, but I do recognize the underlying jealousy at the lack of psychosomatic tax he has to pay, how easy it is for him to do his calling and get rewarded by society for it, while I am crucified between the opposites and almost totally unrecognized for my calling work, even as I have to live in my buddy’s world and he doesn’t have to live in mine. There’s nothing to be done about this functional contradiction, either; the mere articulation of these crucifying energies is the Hermetic function, it lowers psychosomatic pressure by articulating it and sharing it with others; and the feedback I receive from others, too, helps keep me from falling into an echo-chamber.

This is just one example of the work, but I’m constantly juggling and dealing with competing energies like this on a continuous basis.

I will try and engage with this in brief because I enjoy your work and probably am closer to your friend in real life (in terms of career, family, etc.)

Maybe I misunderstand some of the Abraxas stuff, but it would seem to me that the final pill one can attain through your understanding is to fully engage with the world as it is and do what your friend has done. Not so much "make a bunch of money and it takes care of everything," because I actually think money is secondary. Rather, it's the idea of pursuing the work one is good at and being a "good neighbor" so to speak. It sounds like your friend sees work and money as part of a whole life, which also includes friendship, family, hobbies.

If your friend was a Police officer by trade and just made Captain or something (and made less $$$), this would still ring true.

I have long felt that every person basically has a lane through which they can really succeed. If they stray too far outside of their lane, they will have a more difficult life. If they stay in it and really apply themselves, they have a chance to maximize their potential.

Some people figure out this lane early on. Some do, but don't accept it (a recipe for pain IMO). The most successful people tend to understand their lane and pursue it with vigor early on. It sounds like your friend did that, hence his "returns" are now compounding meaningfully.

All that said, I'm sure he also has tons of self doubt privately. And I imagine he also has some of the same "lol wtf is this world even" thinking (even if his terminology would be very different from yours), but he may have found what he's really good at and just embraces that. And perhaps by doing so it has alleviated any existential crap that would otherwise bog a person down. Especially in the world we inhabit today, but not exclusively to it.

MFCR

Consuela's fatal flaw is that he believes anyone with his level of insight would become similar to him; pessimistic, isolated, and depressed, so anyone who seems outwardly happy, personable and successful must be blind.

Not quite, because I don’t think this level of insight makes me superior, just different. This level of insight has extreme negatives associated with it and it is much better in many ways to be wired differently

I didn't say you felt it made you superior, I said you believe that having it means someone must be like you, and so anyone that isn't doesn't have it.

That's myopic, puerile and arrogant. It's how edgy teens think. People with terminal, debilitating illnesses manage to have happy and successful lives. People living under conditions far worse than USA 2026 do as well. You being defeated by your insight doesn't prove anything.

Yes, I think someone with my particular level of insight would carry a weight and feel depressed. My lineage is the continental philosophical pessimist lineage - Cioran, Weil, Schopenhauer, Dostoevsky, Berdyaev, etc. The question is how can one live a productive and meaningful life in spite of that.

Yes, and I'm disagreeing with it. People manage to be happy despite existential dread and even actual, physical suffering. Believing your disposition is immutable is cope. The truth is that many people understand that the world is unfair and filled with suffering, and that that will never change, but have the strength to carve out as much joy and goodness they can despite it. People that lived under far worse circumstances than you who had a far grimmer outlook on the future.

"The truth is that many people understand that the world is unfair and filled with suffering, and that that will never change, but have the strength to carve out as much joy and goodness they can despite it." I don't think strength is the right word to use, but this comment isn't too far away from the Ecclesiastian concept of heleq already discussed - to accept and try to appreciate one's portion in life, whatever it is.

I'm saying your "heleq" is cope. You're "accepting and appreciating" something untrue: that your insight unavoidably results in your disposition. Not only could you still live a happy, good, successful life, but people that do live that way aren't necessarily less insightful and not paying the same psychological tax you are.

I won't belabor it further, so I'll just end with this. You claim you're on this individuation journey that requires brutal self-questioning and analysis. Therefore, at least as a thought experiment, you should be able to consider that I'm right and the consequences of that. What if your friend and tons of other happy, successful people have the same, or even far superior, insight as you?

"What if your friend and tons of other happy, successful people have the same, or even far superior, insight as you?" This is turning into your usual subthread wasteland, but I don't think the philosophical pessimism that underlies reality is contestable - life is painful, nothing we build last, everything dies. How one *responds* to that pessimism can be wildly different, of course, and this is where Schopenhauer and Nietzsche disagreed even though they agreed on the underlying basis of reality. My friend and other optimists I have talked to *have not done the preliminary work to wrestle with and understand the underlying nature of reality, and might even contest it.* So these people *are* shallow in the sense I am referring to. It doesn't mean that their path is wrong, if they're shallow and happy and their perspective works for them, then good for them, I don't think they should change.

yes, its just that this lane may be wider or narrower per individual, and the degree of success may vary wildly. not everyone has a lane which will result in sparkling material success, and so accepting one's heleq versus another's much more sparkly, more successful one can be difficult

"Sparkling material success" matters less if you enjoy what you spend your time doing and see some tangible results from it. And I'd argue that most lanes allow for pretty outsized career success when taken far enough. If for no other reason than going deep into something builds skills, reputation, network, and insights into opportunities (coupled with the means to act on them).

There is also a lot of data that after a certain point (which isn't that much), money doesn't really move the needle.

I have no idea what line of work you are (or were) in. A consistent pattern I have seen with peers is that if they went into a field solely because of money potential, it has often worked out poorly. And obviously it is hard to pivot after being in a space for some time. IMO after about 32 / 33, it becomes VERY difficult.

Well, you see what my calling is: non-redemptive tragic metaphysics. It's hard to build a monetary base off that because it doesn't scale by design, it requires *recognition* in someone already pushed past the psychosomatic threshold, which is inherently a very small number of people.

So the difference is that I have to pay a substantial psychosomatic tax by doing something for money which is not my calling, while my friend can do his calling and not pay the tax. That is largely the source of the resentment/friction.

I disagree strongly with your framing. Your "calling" is not "non-redemptive tragic metaphysics," that's just one application for how you use your natural processes of mind.

If you were to find work that let you better apply the underlying skill set, you would feel happier and also make more money.

Unironically you probably could've been one of the few truly effective therapists because you are able to understand root cause issues. Possibly something like a recruiter, but only in niche industries IMO.

Well, we will see how this plays out further, of course, but I do not feel anywhere near rewarded at all *monetarily* in terms of my calling, although there have been substantial other benefits. I have looked into being a Jungian therapist, but honestly the Jungian therapists I have interacted with have all been less than impressive. The problem is that non-redemptive, tragic metaphysics is highly destabilizing for most people under most conditions, which is why in part (correctly) Jung retreated from the implications of a God image of totality.

You are living too much in theory. I used being a therapist as one example, but let's use recruiting instead. If you were in such a field and placed people into jobs or careers -- and got paid for it -- you would feel better because of tangible results from your efforts.

Living totally in a world of ideas is a road to madness IMO. Obviously I enjoy many of your ideas, but think you may martyr yourself too much (for lack of a better way to put it).

But I am not on a path of ascetic withdrawal ala Schopenhauer - I am actively engaged in life, just with work that I don't find very intrinsically interesting. I think it is very important for me to push myself into uncomfortable situations outside my comfort zone because that act specifically keeps me from falling into an isolated echo chamber. I agree with you that isolate theory-crafting is improper for longterm psychological stability.

Two of my friends died, I fell out with a couple during fraudvirus and one holds a grudge about it and another moved away, and then yeah increased responsibilities for remaining friends , but also a gulf created by my changing spiritual views even though I try to keep the friendships up

I do have a couple communal activities one related to family stuff and another related to religious stuff, but both of those are minor

Fair enough. Sometimes work is just a drag, there is no doubt.

But if nothing else, I always appreciate your poasts. Also I've always felt you had a better ability to take a joke if someone ribs you about "evil in the godhead" or whatever. Goes a long way towards engaging with the harder content IMO.

Thanks, a lot of my beliefs are held provisionally, so to be dogmatic about it would be a form of consciousness narrowing. MIG’s jokes have been appreciated because it shows that at least to an extent he understands my perspective even if he disagrees with it

Accept your Heleq.

Also bitterly cast it off and strive for more.

Be grateful for what God has given you and also believe you deserve more.

Its a crucifixion of opposites.

the main distinction is whether one has to work as a wagecuck or whether one has ascended from the hamster wheel; i am a wagecuck. i am not destitute and my personal consumption requirements are not large - i'm no RSF - but as a pure loser clique i feel always a step away from ruination.

I don't know what your friend does for a living, but I think your narrative is a self-centered fiction indicative of narcissistic tendencies, a complete lack of self-reflection and extreme immaturity.

According to you, on the one hand, you are deeply passionate about your political musings describing this as your calling.

Is it your belief that your friend's career is how he chooses to spend his time because he's passionate about it? and it's just a lucky coincidence that he gets paid a lot of money for it?

Successful adults have to endure spending a lot of time doing things they don't enjoy. You can certainly choose to opt out, forego financial success and pursue your passions. But it's an alternative universe you're living in if you believe there's some equivalency between your online hobby posting and your friend's grownup, adult career.

This is one of the most grotesque and pathetic things I have ever read in my entire life

This is where the consuela flame of having a wife and child finally jumped the shark beyond a shadow of a doubt. There is no way that a person who brought human life into existence and raised that life could be this pathologically and cartoonishly narcissistic. It’s simply beyond belief

Your internal delusions are not important or meaningful to you or anyone else. Only other people can ever bring you meaning as a human being. This is as true for you as it is for the rest of us. Snap out of your pathological self obsession and god complex and for the love of god stop fucking talking to LLMs

This is completely and utterly ridiculous. Someone who was satirizing or caricaturing consuela in bad faith could not do him worse than this

This is literally: “I think that I Am God, but I am surrounded by undeniable empirical evidence that I am not in fact God, and it makes me psychologically distressed”

Yeah, that’s because you’re not God, buddy. Holy fuck. I would go into further detail about how outrageously Jewish this is as well, but I think that part goes without saying

CR. What I find even more annoying than his self-elevation is how he can't resist using that self-appraisal to push down on others while framing it as magnanimousness. See our subthread above.

"I'm admitting my jealousy because I'm being ruthlessly introspective. After a thorough self-inventory, I realized that my jealousy exists because of the noble burden I've been cursed and blessed with (crucifixion of the opposites!): that I'm God."

I mean ackshually you choosing to give him “helpful advice” is doing this same thing (elevating yourself over him while framing it as magnanimity)

Me telling him that he’s a pathetic delusional mentally ill freak who needs to get over himself and engage with other people is more actually helpful to him than anything else anyone says to him

I almost started with "admittedly, part of my motivation is annoyance" but my poasts are too long as is.

I don't mean to frame me subthreading with Consuela as a completely altruistic act. But it is part of it. I'm sure I'm more motivated by boredom and annoyance than wanting to help him out though.

"There seems to be a direct and inverse correlation between materiality and spirituality on this plane, so it makes sense that the former will be overvalued and the latter undervalued by mainstream society. It is what it is, we can only do what we feel called to do and how that manifests externally is outside of our hands."
