your arm around your young bride.

fast forward 700 years. sitting in office afflicted with sick building syndrome, staring beady-eyed at computer screen, anxious about a cold call you have to make, looking forward to another night alone in your rented box seeking comfort with yet another glowing screen

so outdoor manual work (which science shows makes people happy; construction workers have shockingly low rates of depression), followed by a night by the hearth, beer, my young bride, the sense that God loves me?

Don't forget bountiful quantities of mead, peasant free love, and practically every other day being some saint's feast day.

It's a free country. Nothing is stopping you from being a construction worker, a farmer, from living off the land, etc.

Living in one bedroom thatched hut entire family sharing one bed, backbreaking labour in the fields from sunrise to sunset every day, have young bride because previous wife died in childbirth having her 12th kid (but only 3 survived), facing starvation every year if crops fail, no immunity to disease, face full of rotting teeth, life expectancy of about 35, subject to arbitrary whims and oppression of your feudal lord etc etc

OK, if you could survive the 80% child mortality and grow to an adult without picking up some awful chronic disease then your life expectancy was probably around 45-50.

This is leaving out extraordinary life shortening events like major wars, famines and bouts of the Black Plague.

mere survival and comfort aren't the paths to happiness. explain why poor nations report higher levels of happiness than many developed ones.

partly. modest expectations, stronger familial ties, support networks, limited options (too much choice makes people unhappy), religion, defined social role, simple pleasures.
