it was crazy. you'd be walking down the street and some guy would pull up in an el camino and yell "DOOOOOOOOOO THE MACARENA" and everybody - I mean EVERYBODY - would drop what they were doing and start dancing. marching bands were doing it at football games. macarena played on every radio station, even public radio and stations that don't play music. corporate culture became infected and F500 companies were scheduling 'macarena breaks' for their workers just to channel the zeitgeist into something structured and try to cut down on distractions throughout the day from people bursting into dance.

It was absolutely absurd, like there was something in the drinking water that made everyone go crazy. You heard it multiple times per day and everyone would do it at least once per day.

If you were at a sporting event they would play it like three times and everyone jumped up and did it. Janet Reno did it. Tons of high level serious people were doing the macarena in public. Teachers would lead their classes in the macarena. Whole schools would do the macarena at assemblies. Basically anytime there was a large gathering of people, the macarena was done.

I still remember every move. If you played it I would probably start doing it like the manchurian candidate.

Strange times in america my friend.

180.

the 90's was a bizarre time in american history, a break from reality. things were going so well that stuff like the macarena craze and the lewinsky "scandal" actually made the news.

Early example of spicy Latinas dancing being introduced to square white culture via the music video on repeat on VH1 and MTV. Real visceral experience for the 90s American mind, both male and female. See also, Gloria Estefan. The trend would fragment and crescendo with the Ricky Martin/Enrique Iglesias and Shakira/JLo era pop stars.

agreed. would add that gloria estefan (conga) and madonna singing in spanish (la isla bonita) was a full 10 years earlier, 1985-86. what's crazy about macarena is how literally everyone knew it, it was everywhere. the next massive song after macarena was shakira (hips don't lie), 2005.

Lol at putting Hips Don't Lie in the same category as Macarena.

Next big cultural phenomenon song (if you exclude My Heart Will Go On because that wasn't the main craze, it was an offshoot of the Titanic craze) was Who Let The Dogs Out in 2000

Popular but cringy. Remember going out for drinks after work and if it came on the office shrews would get all excited, jump up to dance and try to drag you with them.
