Vidal's portrayal of Shazam as a sexually ambiguous bachelor who wrote long essays on 19th century American literature was not well received, nor were his attacks on the Federal Reserve.[3][4] Vidal was fired after writing a 1955 strip that depicted Shazam fighting a Jewish octopus monster as it strangled the world with tentacles labeled "finance" and "Hollywood".[5]
