my understanding of MMOs is some alternate reality where the rules and stakes are different.
I think virtually all MMOs are failing because all of them have an economy subject to hyperinflation, other than maybe EVE Online, but that game is a spreadsheet manager that it isn't really an 'alternate reality'.
WoW feels like an on-the-rails amusement park ride. While the initial experience could be slightly fun, there are very strict bounds as to what is and isn't allowed. I've never seen any griefing or serious exploiting taking place. I haven't seen any clever scams. The gear in that game doesn't seem unique to the point where some random player can craft a 'god item' that makes him legendary. All I see is some gay 'raid' which looks like Runescape with more polygons, and in that raid theres like 20 health bars from your dorky clan, and like 50 spells in your hotbar (45 of which are deprecated). Nothing happens. I just see people jumping around like fags.

there will always be a segment of people who enjoy MMOs and wow has always been the best MMO, so it's popular
i do think it's important to note that the wow franchise has been coasting on the brilliance of the original game for like 20 years though. present-day wow seems like total garbage, meanwhile they keep re-releasing original "classic wow" because the original game was simply superior to anything that they've been able to produce since then
i played original wow and the universe is absolutely gorgeous and compelling. it definitely speaks directly to White european culture and fantasy. worth noting that wow has always been extremely popular in germany and among germans

There are so many different levels on which to enjoy it - if you are mentally exhausted from work you probably won't have any desire to do Naxx speed runs, but you can go chill and herb or something instead.
But if you don't get WoW you don't get it. I see some people rave about Old School Runescape and I want to think they are trolling, but for whatever reason it connects with them so more power to them.

Speaking of WoW, I'm super-hyped since they just today announced that they will allow free transfers from Classic Anniversary servers to the Classic Era servers I play on. So things are about to get super-active on Era- had been kind of a slow period for the past year or so since they released anniversary and split the Vanilla player base.
