also if you're a Loser, people assume you suck at driving even if actuarially you go like 20 years between accidents on average and aren't even at fault, you still look like a fag if you aren't pulling out in front of people from time to time or whatever. Also I do certain things autistically like rev the engine pretty hard once I'm going over like 15 mph bc I know it's not "bad" bc of Engineering, but also don't go 99 mph like uberproles, and also coast to red lights rather than speeding into them like proles but if I were an uber driver I'd get 1 star reviews, people would be like this guy is a joke, simultaneously looking like a maniac and fag from their POV. actuarial tables show the truth but irl people are like where did this Loser learn how to drive. one of the many terrible burdens of being a Loser irl.

Liability pressure i.e. the relative rates on a liability-only policy which are the best proxy in terms of being a profile of the driver's Clique. Miata = Loser = Cheap. Dodge = Scummiest = expensive

do insurance companies actually charge different rates on different brands of cars unrelated to their replacement cost?

you're damn right they do. I am talking about the liability-only rates, which provides maximum clarity. i.e. the state minimum coverage where you only have coverage for at-fault accidents for damage done to others' property. So it has nothing to do with repair costs of the specific vehicle. literally just the driver profile and whatever safety/driving characteristics endemic to the vehicle, plus how or where it's used.

you can check this yourself online, just Pretend you're getting a quote on some Scummobile and see the rate difference, or if you're lazy and have irl friends just ask a friend who drives something with a V8 or equivalent in power + sporty and they probably pay 2x what you do
