Fucking Starbucks baristas already make a living wage and expect to take home 20% of sales on a couple hundred transactions during a shift? Go fuck yourselves. If you’re making $2.13/hour and I’m one of 20 tables you see that night that you hope to turn into a living wage then 20% is my floor unless you are wildly incompetent or you spill a drink on me and don’t get a manager to give me a comp or something egregious like that. And in most of the country waiters make minimum wage now, but I still tip based on the $2.13/hour logic. It’s insane to me that a waiter at an Outback Steakhouse in CA who gets 30 hours of shifts a week starts with a floor of $500 a week for working 75% of full time and has a legit shot to pull in another $500-800 if they are at all decent at the job. If waiting tables paid that much when I was in college I would have never gone to law school, and definitely would have tried to boot strap some kind of business in my early 20s.
