It was a well-done period piece. You can think the characters were weird or unrealistic or whatever, and sure they were at times. Also, I agree with the OP to the extent that when I first watched this show, I was kind of optimistic about my own career and I saw Don Draper as someone I should look up to, etc. Now, I look at those episodes and I can see what a complete fuck up he is and how unrealistic he is. I can also see that the underlying message that Don was just some diamond-in-the-rough talent that was so good it overshadowed all of his personal failings is complete and total bullshit. No talent is good enough to get away with murder the way he did for 10 years on that show. The whole sub-plot about them firing him was 5 seasons overdue, and his redemptive arc and then setting off a WMD to get back in is so tortured and implausible, but this is what writers do. They are trying to complete the narrative. Give them a break. |
