you ever see that episode of Penn & Teller bullshit where they take two identical twins and give one a $400 hair cut, and the other a $10 dollar haircut, and nobody can tell the difference?

meh, i've been to high end places and low end places and you're a lot more likely to get a good haircut at a higher end place. the key is building a relationship with the person who cuts your hair. lower end places def rush you because volume has a larger effect on their bottom line. the experience, whatever that is worth to you, is better at higher end places.

It's funny there is the salon near the World Trade Center that offers $26 mens hair cut but if you get on the PATH and ride that for 11 minutes to Journal Square, you can get it done for $13

independent shop too

I would probably be about $40 with a tip at the $26 place

i like the place though it's a legit italian alpha no-homo unisex hair salon

Don't bother with the Italian places unless you are Italian and don't mind looking so. They will shave up the back of your neck with a straight razor and it will itch like shit if you don't get a cut every 2 weeks. (They will fade you like this unless you spend 15 minutes explaining them that you don't want them to: http://s3-media3.ak.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/eJAMNgyiDYkarL-32DsPuQ/l.jpg.)

Men's haircuts can be had cheap in MFH. Go to Astor Hair ($20, http://www.yelp.com/biz/astor-place-hairstylist-new-york) or Dr. Mike and Sons ($15, http://www.yelp.com/biz/mike-and-son-barbershop-new-york#query:dr%20mike%20and%20sons).

I get my hair cut by a Russian dude in Astoria with a PhD for $12.

EDIT: "Luckily, you’ll hardly ever encounter a wait—even on a recent Saturday afternoon, patrons were attended to right away at one of three stations. Both the powder-blue space and the trim itself (women $15–$20, men $12) are frills-free, but the service includes a thorough scrub using AG Hair shampoo and conditioner at the lone washing station."

There's an $8 place in Chinatown on Doyers St:

"This bustling, gimmick-free shop operates with the speed and efficiency of the restaurants that surround it. Owner Baishi Huang putters about the tiny space, sweeping up hair and whisking incoming customers into one of its seven chairs. Any complaint about the spartan environs will be curbed by the salon’s central promise: $8 haircuts for men, $9 for women, $10 for long hair (add $3 for a shampoo); no appointment necessary. "

There's also a ton of barber-school shops that offer $6-$8 haircuts.
