I watched Crime 101 (2026) tonight on Prime, which was a box office flop when it was released in theaters - I hadn’t actually even heard of it. It is a heist film in the style of Heat starring Chris Helmsworth and Mark Ruffalo, and I watched it with a relative; it’s not the type of film I would normally be watching these days. It was plotted pretty well and was well directed, and the climax was well resolved, which I was surprised by; the writers had seemed to have boxed themselves into a narrative corner. Surprisingly, I thought Ruffalo’s acting was very strong, even though I associate him with extreme shitliberalism (to his detriment; an actor should not be known for his politics, like DeNiro is) and Helmsworth was miscast as the criminal antihero - I just see a prettyboy Thor in tights. It’s also strange to have a heist film these days centered around diamonds, given diamonds have totally collapsed in value. This should have been set in the cryptocurrency space, I think. Overall not bad, no politics in it, no depth, but an OK way to pass the time while phone scrolling. 6/10.
