Been happening already. Not for api token prices yet (although they are increasingly locking new models behind request forms on aws and azure), but on the public-facing web apps they are pulling everything. Claude you used to basically be able to talk to sonnet 4.6 all day long before it cut you off now it gives you like 3 messages. And codex I used to be able to write like 10K lines of code in a week before it cut me off. Gemini on AI studio is more limited now too. They banned one of my burner accounts last week too lol.

I'm on the basic plan. it might be the same token amounts actually but is just faster now idk. i just hit the 5 hour limit the other night for the first time though. it was a really aggressive loop though and it is way more accurate than it used to be and I was using it for some simulations I was running locally and didn't have to push it to github or move between containers or anything so I might have just been burning through tokens faster than I used to.

they secretly enabled the Fast setting

you have to manually turn it off

they turned it on for people in phases so it wasnt that well known

The API revenue is exploding for these companies as well as their compute constraints, so they don’t need to offer free shit. Anthropic now has an annualized revenue run rate of $45 billion and that’s likely to grow as the models get better. Free users are just an obstacle to making money from agentic users burning through API tokens

They're gonna rug everyone but the highest volume users especially institutions and companies

We will probably end up in a situation where individual users won't even be able to get API access anymore. You'll have to pay for different AI "apps" that have limited functionality. Like "AI therapist" or "AI companion" etc for $29.99 a month each

Imo someone will write a distributed AI that uses all the crypto mining shit that is useless right now and people's own GPUs and you can "earn" usage by contributing to the pool or pay piddling amounts for it

Yeah this is a thing that people are working on I actually think it's pretty promising because a bunch of "off grid" independent people could run it. After we cut all the intercontinental cables and bomb all the data centers

Actually it might. In my shitlaw firm, we see a shit ton of attempts at AI-enabled pro se representation. At minimum people are running their questions through AI before calling us and using AI to audit their bills. If AI usage gets more expensive, that could all go away.
