It’s 90+% basic social skills. I worked with a guy who had a huge facial disfigurement that was a birth defect. He was probably the best networker I ever encountered. The first time you met him you could be consciously aware of how much obvious effort he put into overcoming his disfigurement as a social barrier, but you’d also quickly come to appreciate how skilled he’d gotten at all the basics of interpersonal charm. Like he’d have already put enough thought into you and your situation as far as he was aware of it to ask an interesting or provocative but not at all rude question within 30 seconds of starting a conversation with you. And I’d see him do this with paralegals and waiters at restaurants it was genuinely impressive. By the time you were having the 3rd or 4th conversation you didn’t even think about the huge glaring deformity he had across half of his face. It was more impressive than 99.9999% of the lawyers I’ve ever come across based on intellect alone.
