Why have Hyundai cars never improved in quality since the 1980s?

Isn't that the opposite of what happened? I had a friend in high school who bought a KIA, and the transmission went out at least four times in in that span of time alone
They're now one of the most reliable brands out there, although it may be possible that the others have just regressed (as I have heard to be true about Toyota)

They are behind the Japanese in terms of build quality and driving enjoyment, but they compete (at least in the SUV segment) by offering way more high-end features as standard and by using high end materials comparable to luxury brands.
Reliability is down more-or-less across every brand because fuel efficiency regs have forced everyone to move to inline-4 turbos and turbocharged engines / hybrids across the board. The days of the naturally aspirated v6 or v8 with no complexity in a normal person's car are just about over.

I just want a rear wheel drive v8 450 hp rocket with a backup camera, adaptive cruise control, no fucking spying/tracking/bullshit, powerful AC, and nice leather. They can keep dash screens, Sirius XM, blinking blind spot detectors, self-driving, and all this other bullshit that drives up costs and does jack fucking shit for most people
Oh, and keep it at 50k or under
