whoops I misread OP but I would say that even if you had a roof over your head you count as growing up poor if your family regularly couldn't afford one or more of: electricity, food, running water
but yeah I agree people that made their way to white picket fence are way more likely to say that

when i graduated i dated a younger girl in ug who would constantly talk about how poor she was growin up and how hard it was
we went to her childhood home her parents were still living in in san antonio and i was expecting us to go to the hood
we drove up to a clean neighborhood and her house had 6 bedrooms and was two stories

people definitely see what they want to see
if someone just wants to be a Loser and ngaf they'll convince themselves that any degree of success is rare or doesn't exist basically.
Also libs/redditors really want to think that everyone is poor.

in the US yes its horseshit. proles try to spin life as blue collar in poughkeepsie as "growing up poor" its fucking absurd.
true poverty only exists in other countries.

People who grew up poor or poverty-adjacent mostly reminisce fondly about their upbringings and honor their families, even though, or maybe even *because* they struggled. But they do it very, very quietly and only in like company.
And then people who grew up poor AND caught up the some horrendous web of substance abusing family and similar things to hard to either end of the spectrum. Either they’re blowing up social media with a constant stream of attention-poasting about their “trauma” or they will work very, very, very had to avoid the subject of family and childhood altogether
