that said, i watched a bootleg copy of it on video because we'd just had our first kid and i was frazzled. i remember watching it at like 6 am while trying to rock him to sleep. i was more or less in a daze at the time.

CODA is actually a good film and probably the only mainstream film of the last 30 years that shows a white father in a positive light and a healthy father-child relationship.

The Plot is thin because you are equating the thickness of the Plot with the number of words, which is both stupid and feminine. It’s like saying The Seventh Seal is thin on Plot.

Disagree. The plot is plenty compelling. You don't need some convulated storyline with an A story, a B story, a C story... and a 3-hour run time to be great.

Have only seen 6 of them:

I liked Shape of Water cuz it was different and had Shanon and Hawkins in it.

NCFOM was also really different/pretty good, with a great villian, and a good 'what would you do' aspect.

Kings Speech was interesting bcs I am British and it covered my countrys history and the Monarchy etc.

Oppenh was good but they should have focused more on the 'oh the humanity' aspect much much moar, they really missed that aspect imho

Departed and Birdman were meh, so may rewatch just to be sure.

2018 - The Shape of Water

2008 - No Country for Old Men

2011 - The King's Speech

2024 - Oppenheimer

2007 - The Departed

2015 - Birdman

This really speaks to the general decline in and fracturing of art and culture. I have seen each of the 2007-2011 winners. No Country for Old Men was great. The Departed was very, very good.

Past 2011, I have not seen any of the others, except Spotlight (2016). I don't feel like I'm missing out. I've barely even heard of some of those movies.

Contrast that with the 90s-early 2000s, when I--and millions of other Americans--would have seen a lot of the Best Picture nominees (not just winners) and would have, at minimum, been familiar with nearly all of the rest.

I've seen about all of them except Nomadland and the Artist. I would put them in these tiers:

Great Movies - The Departed, No Country For Old Men (though the ending sucks)

Good Movies - Argo, Coda, Slumdog Millionaire, Parasite, Oppenheimer, Hurt Locker

Interesting But Art shit - Oppenheimer, Parasite, Anora

Rest = Awards Slop

I saw CODA. It was fine, literally haven't thought of it since then and didn't know what it was until googling. In fact before googling I thought it was that movie Rome or whatever which is set in that neighborhood in Mexico City in the 50s or something

2007 - The Departed: I suspect it's not as great as it seemed at the time, but at the time it was amazing.

2008 - No Country for Old Men: Best movie on this list by far.

2009 - Slumdog Millionaire: I really enjoyed it.

2010 - The Hurt Locker: Great movie although nothing really compels me to revisit it.

2011 - The King's Speech: Haven't seen it, will watch on an airplane some day.

2012 - The Artist: Loved it at the time; in retrospect it's more Hollywood disappearing up its own ass and Singin' in the Rain covered very similar territory.

2013 - Argo: Haven't seen it, not really interested.

2014 - 12 Years a Slave: Haven't seen it, not particularly interested in it although I'm sure the acting is great.

2015 - Birdman: Parts of this movie are incredible and other parts pissed me the fuck off but in a good, productive way.

2016 - Spotlight: Great movie, stupendous acting. Really stuck with me. Deserved the win.

2017 - Moonlight: Haven't seen it, probably should.

2018 - The Shape of Water: Haven't seen it; I increasingly find GdT more interesting in theory than practice.

2019 - Green Book: People love to shit on this but it was perfectly watchable and enjoyable. Nowhere near best picture material but oddly kinda underrated.

2020 - Parasite: Really great movie; a lot of fun, mostly manages not to be annoying with the political commentary.

2021 - Nomadland: Should probably see this at some point but eh.

2022 - CODA: Didn't see it; not particularly interested but if I'm on an airplane some time I might give it a watch.

2023 - Everything Everywhere All at Once: Hated it and I'm the theoretical target audience for stuff like this. Very calculated weirdness. I would have watched an Asian-American neo-realist film about the struggles of the family and the taxes tbh but the kung fu kooky stuff was lame.

2024 - Oppenheimer: Great movie, probably best of the year, but not transcendent the way NCfOM is.

2025 - Anora: Haven't seen it, probably will. Suspect that in 10 years or so and divorced from the current annoyances of the cultural moment it'll be a solid watch.

2026 - One Battle after Another: LJL never seen it never going to.

Anora doesn't have any culture war, prisoner of the moment type shit at all, it isn't trying to "say" anything either, it's just a funny self-contained movie. Very rare these days

No Country is arguably my favorite movie of all time, easily in my Mt Rushmore

Spotlight is the most underrated on the list really enjoyed it saw it with my dad and we knew it was gonna win best picture very well paced

Departed is very fun I enjoyed it and rewatched it Nicholson actually was weakest part of the movie, not a Damon fan but he was great here same Wahlberg - I can’t rewatch all the way through now but if it was on I would watch most parts

Birdman - I think I saw twice I really liked it watching it had no clue it won best picture but it did some novel stuff at the time which the academy rewards it seems but was definitely cringe at times

Argo - was fun in theaters but lol @ best picture for that year feels like Traffic type of win

Every everywhere - holy fuck what a piece of shit I had to turn it off, embarrassing to watch didn’t even want to tell anyone I saw part of it

I don’t think I’ve seen anything else of this shit, it just makes me realize NCFOM is a perfect movie I love the ending i love the no soundtrack just the wind and elements I love everything about it up there with Godfather 2, Unforgiven, Seventh Seal, Crimes & Misdemeanors, Deer Hunter, Casino/Goodfellas for me - generational film and this list FAGGOT TRASH best pictures since then confirmed it

Godfather (1&)2, Unforgiven, Seventh Seal, Crimes & Misdemeanors, Deer Hunter, Casino/Goodfellas is a great list of favorites. As a kid, I used to watch spagetti westerns with my Dad, then saw Unforgiven as an adult and almost cried bcs imho, it was brilliant.

No Country for Old Men > The Departed > The Hurt Locker > Argo > Oppenheimer > The King's Speech

Haven't seen the rest, or more than a few minutes of any of the rest, because they looked too gay or dumb or boring.
