If you're at a call back, you've passed their grade point threshold. But you're still competing with others who may (or may not) have higher grades. You still have to sell yourself, especially ITE.

It means you haven't been dinged for going to a bad school or getting crap grades. It doesn't mean that everyone's on an even playing field.

They are interested. If your GPA is on the low end for the firm, you likely made a strong showing during the screening interview. If you want the SA offer, you're going to have to continue to outperform your peers during the call back interview process.

I mean, you did something right during the screener, so keep doing what you're doing.

They're going to look at the full picture (school/grades/resume/personality/etc) so just put your best foot forward.

My single best piece of advice would be to find some concrete reasons why you like the particular firm and play that up

It shouldn't trouble you- the fact that they invited you back means they can live with your stats. It's not like your grades are a big secret. To my knowledge, the screener interviewers simply recommend candidates to the hiring committee (or at least to a recruiting person) to invite back for a callback. In other words, you already have the stamp of approval of at least some people at the firm. Of course, there may be a plethora of candidates with higher grades. But you can't control that, so you shouldn't worry about it.

In my experience I got callbacks that I had no business getting, I like to think because I do pretty well in interviews. I went something like 2/10 on callbacks though. I actually asked a recruiter if grades/school still mattered and they said they were definitely still considered when offer decisions were made.

Well one I had a weird situation where a high ranking partner started asked me who I was going to vote for (September before election) and I didn't really have much of an answer for that. The others I feel like I did well on to the point where I know at least one friend worked at a firm I got rejected at and one interviewer asked if I turned down the offer not knowing I got ding fagged.

Then again this was 2 years ago and between receiving the callbacks and decision time the economy collapsed. So you might be in a better position where firms are more selective on the front end.

You're right I should have sued. That would have helped me find a job. I told the recruiting coordinator and people at my school, everyone agreed there wasn't much to do. School wasn't going to piss off an employer that's hired people before, firm wasn't going to do anything serious to a partner who obviously didn't want to interview kids and didn't give a fuck, I didn't want to start my legal career by being the faggot that sued based on not handling an interview question well.

That's exactly right. Confidence- not cockiness. Enthusiasm for the particular firm and for the practice of law- but not douchiness. Hunger- but not desperation.

These are fine lines to walk, but you did it during the screener and you can do it again.

And put your napkin on your lap during lunch.

As someone whose previously interviewed peeps for OCI:

Basically we get a GPA range to target for each school. We have no choice but to call back everyone of these people (even if you were to drop trou and shit on the desk during the interview). We'll be pleasant with you if you're not in the range. We have a nebulously defined number of call backs we can suggest our "hiring committee" (i.e. the HR lady) to peeps outside the range who are cool.

Pretty nonchalantly since that's a good sign that the interview is FUBAR already. As anticipated, I have gotten very rapid rejections (same day or next day) from those interviews.

lawyers are smug pieces of shit for asking dumb questions like that. i would be very tempted to say that I went to a better school than they did (if that was the case, and it probably was) and that therefore it was harder to get good grades.

That doesn't seem like the sort of question someone from kirkland should be asking.
