My name is Michelle Preston and this is my third year teaching Psychology I, AP Psychology, and World Geography at Shawnee Mission West.
I grew up in Lansing, KS and graduated from Lansing High School. I have a bachelor's degree in History and Secondary Education from Baker University. The Shawnee Mission West High School teacher involved in a possible misconduct investigation is in the hospital Tuesday morning, after her vehicle drove off an embankment in Miami County.
The Shawnee Mission School District confirmed that a teacher was placed on administrative leave after allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student, and said that they have turned the investigation over to police.
Lenexa Police assisted Overland Park Police on Monday afternoon with serving a search warrant at the teacher's Lenexa home on Monday afternoon. The address of the home matches that of Michelle Preston, a third-year Psychology and World Geography teacher at Shawnee Mission West High School.
Police did not say what they were looking for or if they found evidence in the case during the search.
The Miami County Sheriff's Department confirmed that Preston was in a single car accident around 4 p.m. Monday when her car went off an embankment at 247th Street. The police report said her car left the cliff ledge and vaulted into the opposite side embankment of the creek. She was taken to the hospital via helicopter and her condition is unknown.
The Shawnee Mission School District did not say how they learned about the relationship, but FOX 4 has learned compromising photos were distributed of the teacher over the internet. |

Lenexa and Overland Park Police have confirmed that they executed a search warrant on Monday on the home of Michelle Preston, the teacher at the center of the investigation. The Shawnee Mission School District has not officially released the woman's name, but the Miami County Sheriff's Office says that a woman with the same address as the one searched by police was in a car wreck in that county on Monday night.
Authorities say that Preston was flown to a hospital where she is in serious condition. According to authorities, Preston's SUV left 247th Street in Miami County at a high rate of speed and vaulted off an embankment, coming to rest under a bridge. Authorities say that but for a call to emergency dispatchers by the SUV's On-Star system, it could have been days before the vehicle was spotted.
Preston is under investigation, but has not been charged with any wrongdoing at this point. Also, there is no confirmation that she is the woman in the nude pictures that were circulated by students, but the face of that woman does appear to be Preston.
District officials would not discuss the allegations that nude pictures of Preston were being circulated on some student cell phones, but students at Shawnee Mission West High School say that the situation was the top topic in class.
"I think it's just kind of weird just hearing everyone talking about it," said student Alix Tsiames.
"Everyone was talking about it non-stop, you pass tables and everyone was talking about it," said student Ashley Bryant.
Student Max Price says that he was sent the pictures more than once.
"I deleted it every time, it's just going around real fast," said Price.
Some students say that they believe the pictures are fake, created by someone who wanted to get back at the teacher for some reason.
"Some of them don't look real," said student Derron Warren. "I think some kids might not like her at the school so they might not want her to be here no more."
"In this one it's all blurry, like she has a big head and a small body like a teenage body," said Warren.
Students say that they are hoping the allegations aren't true. Preston, who teaches psychology and geography and serves as the freshman cheer coach, has taught at the school for three years.
"She drove off a cliff, I guess, trying to kill herself, so nothing good is coming out of this," said Price. "I heard she was a good teacher, she made the class very interesting."
"Everybody makes bad choices and the ramifications for her are long going," said parent Mary Head. "So I just feel badly for her and the choices she made and the impact for the school and herself." |

The latest update in the case as of now is that the accused teacher has met with an accident. On Monday afternoon at around 4.00 pm her car went off a mound. She was alone in her SUV- Chevrolet Equinox when the accident took place at the 247th Street in Miami as confirmed by the Sheriff’s Department of the Miami County. The police officials reported that her SUV domed on the opposite side of the embankment of the creek. More details have been released about an accident Monday night in which a woman was injured after the sports-utility vehicle she was driving careened down a 30-foot embankment and through a portion of Wea Creek.
According to a Miami County Sheriff’s Office report, emergency units were dispatched at 4:37 p.m. Monday in response to reports of a one-vehicle injury accident along 247th Street just east of Flint Road.
An on-scene investigation revealed that the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox was eastbound on 247th Street when it went off the right side of the road prior to the bridge and off a cliff edge, then vaulted through the air, landing on the opposite side of the creek’s embankment. The driver, who was identified as Michelle L. Preston, 27, of Lenexa was taken by air ambulance to University of Kansas Hospital. The extent of her injuries has not yet been released.
Preston, a teacher at Shawnee Mission West High School, recently was placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation by the Overland Park Police Department. The investigation is based on claims that she was having an inappropriate relationship with a student, the department’s public information officer said. |

The Star reported that the school board voted against renewing the probationary contract of Michelle Preston, a third-year psychology and world geography instructor and cheerleading coach. The board reportedly cited a violation of district policy forbidding inappropriate behavior with students as a reason for her dismissal.
Preston had been on administrative leave since March 7 after school officials received a report that Preston was allegedly carrying on an inappropriate relationship with a student. She has 10 days to appeal her firing.
No charges have been filed against the 27-year-old Preston. However, police say the file is still open, the Star reported.
The same day that her suspension was announced, Preston was involved in a car wreck in Miami County. Her 2011 Chevy Equinox went off a cliff ledge at 247th and Flint and landed in a creek embankment. She was airlifted to a local hospital.
The Star reported that Preston answered the door of her Lenexa home Tuesday, refused to comment other than to say she was still recovering from the injuries she suffered in the wreck.
Preston's bio on the Shawnee Mission West website has since been removed, but it used to read:
