(Person who has never lived in a city)
Listen, some people want big houses so they can sit in their backyards and play with their dog.
Other people don't care about a big house and just want to live in a major icy because they prioritize having a vibrant social life and being near cultural amenities. Why can't you just accept that your preferences are yours and that other people's are valid also instead of trying to prove that people who have different preferences than you are "wrong" somehow? XO posters just look stupid with the "b-b-but the OPERA" crap because that's really missing the point of living in a world city.

Not a lib, but suburban living is generally absolutely awful. Need to drive everywhere, housing is huge but low quality, the people suck, restaurants/stores are usually low quality chains. I lived for years in one, came back many years later and didn't know anyone there because no one ever talks to anyone else. They just sit inside and watch TV. The picture in the OP is a great example of this.
And yes, people can say that some wealthy suburbs with nice walkable city centers close to excellent housing and excellent regional trains to major city centers but those are a small minority of suburbs. Most are just soulless places where it is cheap to raise kids full of soulless people watching local sports and drinking beer like the dumbs they are.

There's definitely correlation but even among wealthy locations you have a lot of crap suburbs. A bunch consist of McMansion filled suburban hellholes where the houses are huge and cost like $1m+ but it still has the problems of other suburbs: nothing to do, nothing is walkable, commutes are long, etc. Great, so now the house is bigger, has more land and now has a pool. The TV is bigger and the beer is pricier. But same basic equation.
I think a lot of what XO loves with respect to small towns is actually represented by wealthy vacation locations. Stuff like Aspen, sections of the Hamptons, and so on. Everyone is wealthy, walkable towns with tons of restaurants and shops, plenty of entertainment options and no crime. But that has pretty much no relation to typical suburban living.

I would modify that to "big city" problem. SF/SV, LA, DC, Chicago, etc. all have horrid commutes to the burbs.
Also, I would say that raising kids in MFH can be 180 if you're rich. Imagine a rowhouse or a multi-floor penthouse unit near Central Park, top private schools and on weekends you live at your second house in the Hamptons. Take a nice ski/dive vacation or trip to Europe/Asia/African safari every year. Easy access to hired help to clean, babysit, etc.
For people that aren't filthy rich, I think near urban suburbs (Brooklyn, Hoboken, Jersey City, Riverdale, etc.) are all solid options that balance commute/amenities and cost.

I grew up smack in the middle of downtown of a huge city. I could not fathom living in a suburb at any point in my life. I see the hordes of suburbanites marching in pack fashion to the commuter rail at 5:30pm to escape the city and I thank the heavens that isnt me.
The city has nothing to do with "culture" or "opera" or whatever else people say. It has to do with energy. Those suburbs are dead places. I spend a fair bit of time in the nicest suburbs of the city I live in because many of my friends now live there after doing their 8 year city stint. It's mind numbingly boring and not a one of them is able to come home from work and not immediately start drinking.
I always ask them why they left the city and they always say "for the schools". This is code for "for the homogeneity".

City has way better food and nightlife options. Nice suburbs have a few restaurants that would be above-average at best in the city but they cost as much as top-notch city places. Shitburbs have chain restaurants and maybe a Ruth's Chris. It's annoying to drink in the burbs and nightlife is full of cougars, charity galas, boring shit.
Suburbs are way better for outdoor activities and entertaining at home. There's a lot to do if your social calendar doesn't revolve around foodie/bar/art gallery stuff.
Many suburban people work in the city or go out there so I don't know what they're missing out on exactly. It's a little more work to go on a date or meet friends but you can do it pretty easily if you want. If you have a family or don't go out every night it seems CR.

It has nothing to do with having something to do, it has to do with a buzz of activity and just a general "hum" that exists in the city that does not exist in the burbs.
I don't need to be stimulated 24-7, I actually live in a pretty quiet neighborhood now, I just need to be a bit in the middle of it not off on an island 15 miles away.
I like being able to walk down a street and see a lot of people around, I like parks that are filled with people, I like hearing the streets and the thousands of little restaurants and bars that are everywhere. Suburbia, even the prestigious ones, just seem super dull which is intentional.

agreed. great place for growing up. lots of space to explore with friends in a safe environment.
not so great for young adults, which is why they rightfully move to and experience the big city until they are ready to provide that same sense of comfort and safety to their own children. after kids are out of the house, move back to the city.
that's what my parents did and that's what i'll likely do too.

My buddies and I played plenty of home run derby at city parks. Was never an issue. We never built forts. We would ride bikes all over but you were always one/wrong/move away from being blasted by a bus.
The worldliness isn't gained from the subway itself, per se, but the exposure to a lot of different things that you would never be exposed to.
I had a lot of friends from a wide range of social classes and races, religions, etc. A lot of my suburban bros didnt then and still dont and I think that is kind of sad.

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
