If youre looking to bitch about it, here's my list:

1. The whole thing depends on you caring about Matt Damon dying. But they dont spend a single scene introducing you to a single person on earth who cares about him. Not a fucking shot of two parents sitting on the couch watching nervously. Or beside his grave, when they think he's dead. Or getting the call from NASA or the President. Or a girlfriend, a dog, anything. WTF was that. Multiple shots of crowds gathered around the world at the end, but no family gathered? Nobody cares about this guy, why should I?

2. DIVERSITY

3. No real solitude, despite spending two years alone on a planet. Some of the explosion shit couldve been cut for just some time of him sitting on a rock, all alone.

4. His realization that he has been left behind passes in a second and he shows no emotion. It's the second big emotional pull of the plot: 1) Dont let he die! and 2) Fuck! They left him behind!

And this one gets short shrift, too. No tears, no anger, no bewilderment that he has been abandoned on a rock to float in space. Just moves on to the next action scene.

5. Jeff Daniels character doesnt know what the fuck its supposed to be. Jerk? Political slimeball? Good guy? Who is this guy?

6. No full frontal on Damon.

5. he is the rational political minded bro who sees the big picture. A character not being a cliche is a pretty dumb criticism though. I agree with the rest except the homo one.

the film is marketed primarily to millennials and millennials were raised on the internet - an emotionless cesspool of text largely without any vocal or body language clues of intention.

well the astrophysics guy was Donald Glover, whose mere presence made the movie a little better. Still it was a pretty all-star cast all around that made a terrible movie. I like Kristen Wiig but I would say her character was the most annoying of all

Everything about this movie was perfunctory. No emotion. No one cared about Damon. Damon and the director did a terrible job conveying the loneliness and isolation that being millions of miles away from all other humans would entail.

Way too much focus on what was happening on earth. Should have been shot entirely from Damon's point of view. Other characters were ridiculous and annoying.

As mentioned, dialogue was beyond cringeworthy.

It was a collection of contrived setbacks and problems, each of which were quickly solved without much difficulty, never creating any tension or leaving the outcome in doubt. The stakes were always low, no real sacrifices were made, and in fact nobody even gets hurt during the entire movie (other than Damon getting poked by a small metal rod near the beginning).

i find it tough to watch dumbed-down sci-fi films after seeing russian solaris. sci-fi can be used to make intelligent commentary on loss and isolation and so forth, but "the martian" is more like a stupid version of "moon."
