There was also a fair bit of talk about 90s being the time "when geeks became cool" supposedly, which was partly a reaction to the dawning of the PC and internet age. But it fit with the general 90s notion of valorizing iconoclasts/skeptics/those who reflexively rejected "conformity" and anything that was too "mainstream" (which was itself a transparent reaction to 80s notions of coolness). But this all led to someone as absurdly aspie as Bill Gates being super famous and spending a lot of time on TV. So there were different ways to get the wrong message that being nice meant you were trying too hard/weren't smart. |
