UNINTENDED CONTHEQUENTHETH!

Ed Rensi started as a grill man for McDonald’s in Columbus, Ohio, in 1966. He was promoted to manager within a year and continued to be promoted, all the way up to president and chief operating officer in 1984. In 1991, he was named chief executive officer and retired to a life of speaking professionally about his experiences in 2007.

In May, Rensi was asked about the discussion over raising the minimum wage. He responded: “I guarantee you if a $15 minimum wage goes across the country you’re going to see a job loss like you can’t believe. It’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 robot than it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries.”

I remember when the minimum wage argument was going on a couple years ago, and someone here posted a pic of a hispanic woman at a protest claiming she'd worked the register at a fast food place for 20 years and still made minimum wage. The consensus was basically that this woman provided zero value. With just a little hustle, anyone can work their wage up to asst manager or manager in a year or two. The fact that she was still working the register spoke volumes.

So it's a good mix. You have jobs for people who simply don't provide much other value in the workplace, and you also provide people with opportunities for bootstrapping who might not be able to otherwise through schooling.

Why is the alternative of a lower minimum wage better?

If you keep the minimum wage lower all you do is forced the state to provide subsidies to the company and the worker to subsidize these pointless jobs that could easily be eliminated.

Better to automate these jobs away, train the workers for new jobs and provide a guaranteed income (which can be funded through the increased productivity) to those who can't adapt.

Eliminating the tax base of minimum wage employees and increasing the handouts necessary to provide for them shifts the burden further onto the middle class. You aren't going to be able to train these people (high school kids/literal retards) to do anything but be low level cogs for businesses.

The so called increase in productivity is primarily distributed to the investor class who don't pay as much tax on their investments as wage cucks do.

Finally there are numerous deleterious effects of removing tons of low skilled workers from the labor force in addition to purely economic ones. Giving these people more free time will lead to increased crime and drug use. The younger workers won't have the opportunity to acquire low level work experience which teaches many of them humility, responsibility and work ethic

McDonald's workers already get subsidies:

- EITC

- Food Stamps

- Subsidized Health Care

Unless your willing to get rid of these subsidies we're just debating how we want to subsidize the bottom 20% not whether we should subsidize them.

The so called increase in productivity is primarily distributed to the investor class who don't pay as much tax on their investments as wage cucks do.

Eliminate the preference for capital gains if that is your concern and institute a progressive consumption tax.

Finally there are numerous deleterious effects of removing tons of low skilled workers from the labor force in addition to purely economic ones. Giving these people more free time will lead to increased crime and drug use.

Let's figure out how to make a world without work function rather than try to keep afloat an old model that no longer works.

The younger workers won't have the opportunity to acquire low level work experience which teaches many of them humility, responsibility and work ethic.

School, volunteering, civic engagement all develop those skills. The glorification of hamburger flipping jobs on xoxo is lulzy because most people here never worked those jobs.*

* Fully expect to get 80 replies from V50 associates who got their start at McDonalds

If automation is going to happen at the same speed than a minimum wage isn't a cause of McDonalds using robots. Either the dude is lying, and reptiles like you are just following his deception so you can insult libs, or he is telling the truth and the higher minimum wage has brought faster automation.

> take creationists. According to Gallup polls, about 46% of Americans are creationists. That’s half the country.

And I don’t have a single one of those people in my social circle. It’s not because I’m deliberately avoiding them; I’m pretty live-and-let-live politically, I wouldn’t ostracize someone just for some weird beliefs. And yet, even though I probably know about a hundred fifty people, I am pretty confident that not one of them is creationist. Odds of this happening by chance? 1/2^150 = 1/10^45 = approximately the chance of picking a particular atom if you are randomly selecting among all the atoms on Earth.

About forty percent of Americans want to ban gay marriage. I think if I really stretch it, maybe ten of my top hundred fifty friends might fall into this group. This is less astronomically unlikely; the odds are a mere one to one hundred quintillion against.

People like to talk about social bubbles, but that doesn’t even begin to cover one hundred quintillion.

I live in a Republican congressional district in a state with a Republican governor. The conservatives are definitely out there. They drive on the same roads as I do, live in the same neighborhoods. But they might as well be made of dark matter. I never meet them.

To be fair, I spend a lot of my time inside on my computer. I’m browsing sites like Reddit.

Recently, there was a thread on Reddit asking – Redditors Against Gay Marriage, What Is Your Best Supporting Argument? ... ask one of the largest sites on the Internet, with an estimated user base in the tens of millions.

It soon became clear that nobody there was actually against gay marriage.

In a thread with 10,401 comments, a thread specifically asking for people against gay marriage, I was eventually able to find two people who came out and opposed it, way near the bottom.

Self checkout is TTT, especially at grocery stores. But it will be great when you can just push the cart through and have everything auto scanned instantaneously.

This is totally wrong. I don't want to deal with people at all. I want to get what I want when I want it reliably and consistently with minimal interruption. People are a terrible way to accomplish that, and toll booths are a perfect example of this. EZ Pass >>>> human toll takers.

McDonalds replacing cashier with robots rather than paying a higher minimum wage is strong argument for a higher minimum wage.

Automation is a good thing and it isn't occurring because labor is too cheap. The higher minimum wage forced McDonald's to adopt technology that will boost overall productivity.

The Black Death which wiped out Europe's surplus population led to the Renaissance which brought about the greatest sustained increase in human welfare. Thankfully we don't need a plague to bring about far greater automation. Instead we can adopt policies to force companies to increase productivity while allowing former workers to live off a guaranteed income.

The problem is, these were jobs meant for a HS kid to pick up some cash on the side. We had a nice thing going where you'd get a pretty worthless, but happy to make some money young kid helping you out, you understand you're not at max efficiency and it could probably be a little cheaper, but we're all ok with that. Some of these people excelled, became managers and maybe wound up lifers.

Then, all of a sudden, people started taking this on as their career and trying to have a family. Then insisted on being full time. Now want a "living wage." Now the company is evil if they don't pay anyone working for them enough to live on when that shouldn't be the intention. So the whole social contract is gone.

Do you really think a 7.25 minimum wage is what's holding back robots? Cut me a fucking break. They would do this shit whether it saved them $0.50 or $5. And by the way, these statements are complete fraud&lies. It's a bluff, and never happens in cities where the wage is raised because -- like I said -- they would (and will, at some point) be doing this shit whether it saved them a dime or a dollar.

Get the fuck out of here. It's embarrassing that our minimum wage is so low and there's no arguement against pegging it to inflation. This helps American workers, and hurts illegal immigrants.

People are such irrational dumbasses on the subject.

Raising the minimum wage from $10 to $15 only brings about robots if the price of a robot is the equivalent of between $10-15 per hour. If it was more, they'd stick with the people. If it was less, they'd go to the robot.

So what are the odds that the robot price was between $10-15 per hour? The answer is it doesn't really matter, because even if it is $14.99 now, it'd be below $10 in a matter of months.

McDonalds is making this statement now to try and convince dumbasses that they don't have to pay their fry cooks, who can't be automated, enough money to feed their family (while franchise owners rake in millions).

a kiosk isn't going to open up the place at 5am and cook mcgriddles. Only a lifer will and those people should get paid $15+.

I would be very interested to see how much eventually gets automated. Cashiers are like 1-2 staffers out of a 6+ who might be there. And you still going to have a backup cashier and a guy to bring out your food.
