Is the non-equity portion in bond funds?

I've considered this but one of the big negatives to it, in my view, is that bond funds also may be overvalued currently, given the unexpectedly low interest rates continuing.

And it seems foolish to hold 40% cash or whatever.

Yeah, I agree, that's why I ask. What concerns me is that (unless they are very short-term bond funds) an interest rate increase would demolish both stocks and bonds.

PROTIP: bond FUNDS and "bonds" are not remotely the same.

bond funds are just julia-level portfolio managers buying whatever bonds are getting sold in a given week. just buy individual tax-exempt muni bonds at their original offering price (so you don't get raped in the secondary) and hold them to maturity.

that's why this is a PROTIP. it takes some work to find stuff you want and you have to take on a lil duration in order to get some yield. if you have to sell prior to maturity, you'll pay mondo transaction costs. and the buying process isn't straightforward like it is for picking up some vanguard bond fund.

Cr but Tbf a decade is a short horizon in the timeline of the economy the size of America but you’re too low IQ to realize this. We KNOW zero hedge will eventually be proven right because we know the debt is growing faster than the economy and so we KNOW America will never pay back its debt. So it’s just a matter of when people stop buying us debt.

You’re right that the question is when global investors stop buying US debt. You’re wrong to assume it’ll be anytime soon tho. Europe is dying with an awful economic outlook. And China already owns trillions of dollar denominated assets - they have as much to lose as us from the dollar losing reserve currency status

Interest rates are low as fuck and there’s no FX risk on our interest payments - it’s all in money we print. I’d double the debt and plow that $$ into infrastructure

there’s literally nothing they could do to make them not care about their $3.5 *trillion* of us dollar FX reserves. not to mention chinese-owned real estate + financial assets

our country will seem dumb for not taking more advantage of this situation. the next politician that compares the federal government to a family paying 26% apr for their credit cards should be punched in that face

The stock market often makes no sense these days. Personally, I think the biggest problem is investors being too focused on "growth" -- they'd rather a company that made $1/share last year and $1.10/share this year, than a company that consistently generates $5/share.

no one really views GAAP eps (“$1/share”) as a smart way to look at profitability for nearly any business (maybe banks are the exception). you can’t pay for anything with accounting profits

also yes equity markets prioritize upside (unlike debt investors). news at 11. this is the ballad of every investor that missed the boat on FAANG

I was just making up numbers. I just feel like institutional investors put such a high priority on growth, that you wind up with shit like Uber constantly growing and losing a ton of money in the process. Amazon is the rare success story.

i get it but remember that equity means unlimited upside and limited downside. so investors would be dumb not to make bets on the future. most of the companies you’re focused on couldn’t (and shouldn’t) raise much debt now for the same reason.

the world can change radically different in shorter periods of time

uber is purposely operating at a loss and it’s good that investors have a chance to own it before it fully matures.

I am not a financemo but there's certainly downside if they go bankrupt.

Uber is getting fucked right now because (1) governments have decided to start regulating them and not buying the "we're just an app" bullshit, and (2) they were purposely operating at a loss, but the loss was too steep. I've had multiple trips where, as long as you pay with cash, taxis are significantly cheaper than Uber. They've ingrained this idea with the public that Uber is a cheaper option, when they should have been competing on convenience.

Of course there’s downside. I mean you can only lose the $35 bucks you paid in exchange for a lottery ticket.

An uber bull would roll his eyes and say all that bullshit is short term friction that won’t matter in a few years. What happens when uber starts offering driverless electric luxury car rides for a third of the price of any taxi and twice the safety? uber can probably also displace ups and FedEx eventually.

uber’s current market cap implies a 6% chance of eventually having Apple’s valuation. That doesn’t strike me as too crazy

I'm legitimately thinking of cashing out my 401k at this point. We're going to get fucked in a year or two, and while it'll bounce back eventually, that's another decade away.

Yeah. I'll take the tax hit for sure (which, to be fair, is just deferred income tax and we've not only had that cut, but I'm in a lower-income state now), plus that stupid penalty, but it's still enough money that I'm thinking I'd rather have it in cash now than have to wait 10-20 years.

Just do roll it over into a self directed IRA and buy a rental property and thank me later. You wont take any tax hit or 10% penalty.

I'll look into this. I don't really care about the tax hit (it's tax-deferred money anyway, so while I'd rather have more money, it's not unfair) but I don't want to take the penalty.

I just want the cash on hand, to be honest.

I have no idea. My stuff is mostly bond and index funds, I think. I'm just considering trying to unlock the cash now because I don't want to risk waiting 10-20 years for the economy to recover.
