they're playing with rituals and making a mockery of them.
that's a dangerous game to play.

On a grand scale 9/11 was worse for sure, but locally? If you aren't Muslim... 1/6 personally felt worse to me.
There is no unity, because 'the enemy' this time isn't some foreign group of terrorists far away that we can take down as a team.
It's the people I have to live with, the people I see every day. 40% of this nation supported a domestic terrorist attack on our very nation. If they win, my vote doesn't matter. My voice doesn't matter. My life doesn't matter.
Jaded? Maybe. But I sure as hell remember both events.

The Republican / conservative narrative is meant to divide us by divorcing its followers from the reality of the situation and preventing the introspection and reconciliation that in a functional political environment would allow the country to unite.
While the "liberal media" may over sell by comparing it to 9/11 (which I will get to in a moment), they are still much more accurate to the events of the day and the implications since. It wasn't just a "riot," it was an attack on democracy enabled by the then current president after months of him attacking the democratic process that has since been normalized by the Republican party and propaganda machine. And yeah, considering that the comparisons are being made out of a legitimate pain of not just the action itself but the knowledge that the same pressures that lead to the insurrection attempt are still in full force and most of the larger figures that facilitated the event are likely to face any consequence, as well as not knowing where the whole things lead, I am not going to get too angry at people over slightly over playing the significance of an incredibly significant event, especially given the right trying to remove all the significance of the event.
As for the the comparison with 9/11 - I honestly think the last year of the Trump presidency, between his response to Covid, BLM and then instigating the insurrection attempt is at least domestically, more devastating to the American people than 9/11, but the insurrection attempt by itself probably not, with one big caveat - we don't know what the long term implications will be. It is a very real possibility that the normalization of 1/6 leads to the GOP's war on democracy to accelerate to an extent it crosses a line that we can't return to. And we will probably only know whether we cross this half a decade to a decade after the fact.
Having said that, there are people that are trying to decouple 1/6 for all the wrong reasons. One way the insurrection attempt is worst and 9/11 is that it reveals deeper and uglier truths about American culture and American politics in a way that 9/11 didn't, and a huge amount of the narrative about this event is an attempt to distract from these truths. And this is absolutely dangerous in a way that 9/11 wasn't

9/11 had a higher loss of lives but 1/6 was the greater threat to American democracy and way of life.
The 9/11 terrorists didn't even come close to toppling America. In a way they united Americans. The 1/6 terrorists, on the other hand, divided America to a point not seen since the Civil War.
The inside threat is scarier than the outside threat.

people acting like 9/11 is worse are living the God damn epitome of dramatic irony
9/11 was unsuccessful anti-American terrorism
1/6 was a failed coup, but undeniably will be seen as a/the major quickening event in the death of America/American idealism
9/11 failed in the long term. Those people were not successful in changing America.
The ideas espoused by those responsible for 1/6 are growing, strengthening, and have been gaining further ground every day since. They're almost certainly going to win in the next two election cycles, if not in the next two years.
