I spent 3 months in egypt, and it is by far the worst country i have ever visited. We had to have armed security escorts with us and drivers, who all receive kickbacks to take you to scam sites where they try to strongarm you into buying perfume or papyrus or whatever bullshit. I can't imagine going with some huge tour group & being sitting ducks, constantly on edge
The air was filthy & smelled like burning garbage, the pyramids were ruined by all the touts trying to shove shit in your face.

Food is shit. Ruins are fascinating. Red Sea diving/snorkeling is credited.
Old Islamic Cairo has good sights and the old colonial downtown is atmospheric in its decay.
Touts are out of this world. Worst of any place I've been to.

Finishing up a pack I sneaked home from a work trip. Then it'll be mournfully missing them till the next work trip.
Re Egypt - make sure you see the pyramids outside Cairo, not just the big ones at Giza. Bent pyramid and the Red pyramid. Especially the Red pyramid at Dashur. It's away from the sprawl and gives you a sense of seeing the pyramids rise out of a desolate desert that the Giza ones must have in the past before the city grew around it. When we went there there was only one other tourist while Giza was packed with people.
You can hire a car/driver via your hotel cheaply for the day to see the pyramids outside Cairo and then finish at Giza.

Sounds 180. Gotta put the time in in March though.
the tour I'm doing is through a tour group. I can send you the deets in the event you want to join our group or do something on your own later.
Rugrats are a problem because they are basically full price. I guess you would leave them behind-- maybe not w your FIL though!

Lights unfiltered pall mall just for you.
Egypt is intriguing. The Egyptian ruins are fascinating. They're almost hard to believe. We take the Greek and Roman ruins for granted as there's a cultural familiarity that's persisted to this day, it's still hardwired into western culture so the architecture and statues still have a relevancy to us and we know men and women walked the streets of Pompeii and Athens sharing some common mindsets and attitudes.
But the Egyptian stuff? Whoa, man! It's an entirely different metaphysical belief set. There's no surviving civilization today that can claim descendant from the Egyptians in a meaningful sense because there's no lingering shared cultural relevancy. Modern Egypt is thoroughly Arabic. It almost makes you accept the fantastical claim that aliens influenced the ancient Egyptians. The temples and tomb paintings you'll see are really out of this world. Absolutely nothing like the Greek and Romans.
But don't ignore Arabic Egypt either. It's a different heritage and I enjoyed seeing the great mosques in Cairo too. The old islamic quarter has buildings worth visiting. Beautiful architecture.
